Gdańsk

What to do in Gdańsk?

On the Baltic Sea, Gdańsk is one of the most picturesque cities in Poland and is the largest amber producer in the world. It’s so gorgeous, Russia, Prussia, Germany, and Sweden fought over it for millennia.

Gdańsk also has an incredible history dating from 9th century fishermen, to 14th century Teutonic Knights, when Poland was the largest country in Europe, to invasions in the past century. And there’s clearly a reason why everyone wanted it, it’s lovely.

  • Gdańsk is part of three coastal cities that are each beautiful and very fun to visit. The other two are Sopot and Gdynia. We recommend visiting each one, exploring the Baltic Sea, and checking out the street markets filled with amber - because Poland is one of the largest producers of amber in the world. All from this beautiful area.

We also recommend visiting Westerplatte, the site where Germany invaded and started WWII. There is a fascinating museum there and monument. Also visit the museum on the Deluge, when Sweden brutally attacked Poland in the 17th century.

And when you’re on your way to Gdańsk, if you take the train from Warszawa, stop at Malborg Castle. It is the largest red brick castle in the world. You can easily spend three hours exploring it.

  • Gdańsk is on the sea, so it’s the best place for fresh fish and seafood. Poland in general loves fish, so you must take the opportunity to get some fresh Trout (Pstrang) with potatoes.

  • Gdańsk is a fun, colorful, loud area of Poland. It’s a popular place for college students on spring break from Western European countries. It also has plenty of family friendly areas to enjoy.

One of our favorite parts is going into the sea and touching the jelly fish - cold water jelly fish don’t sting! And they glow in the dark! Which is honestly so cool and worth a trip.

And for those that love history, Gdańsk has been on the map since the 9th century when it was just a small finishing town. There’s so much to learn here.
